A ICRC convoy in the Pool.
The ICRC has been working since 1993 in the Republic of the Congo, where it seeks to improve the situation of civilians affected by armed violence by providing basic necessities and better access to clean drinking water and to health care. In the current transitional period the ICRC has been particularly active in the Pool area where it is meeting the need for humanitarian aid resulting from the latest conflict.

Together with the Congolese authorities, the ICRC’s Brazzaville delegation promotes the formal inclusion of international humanitarian law and human rights law in the instruction of the armed forces, police and gendarmerie. More generally, the ICRC endeavours to raise awareness of basic humanitarian principles among bearers of weapons, and to spread knowledge of the basic rules of humanitarian law and human rights law in the police and gendarmerie.

In cooperation with the Congolese Red Cross the ICRC also restores contact between relatives separated by conflict, reuniting children with their families where possible.

Finally, the ICRC verifies that the conditions of detention of people deprived of their freedom meet international standards.
