ICRC Annual Report 2003
The 2003 Annual Report of the International Committee of the Red Cross: the ICRC's field operations out of nearly 80 delegations worldwide; its mandate to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and its work to promote respect for international humanitarian law.

During another challenging year, in which independent and humanitarian action encountered severe difficulties, more than 12,000 ICRC staff worldwide continued their efforts to visit people deprived of their liberty, to provide basic assistance to those affected by armed conflict and to care for the sick and wounded.

"Promoting respect for international humanitarian law remained the bedrock of ICRC activities ..."

Promoting respect for international humanitarian law remained the bedrock of ICRC activities and became more necessary than ever amidst attempts to question its relevance in the "fight against terrorism". While carrying out their work, five ICRC staff members lost their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Annual Report provides an in-depth account of the ICRC's operations in 2003, broken down by country. There is a section covering activities carried out at the Geneva headquarters and another includes operational statistics and a statement of accounts. The report includes an up-to-date list of countries party to the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols.

For the general public, this publication is available only in PDF format.
