Jakarta students win moot court competition

Jakarta (ICRC) – Universitas Indonesia of Jakarta has won the Indonesian national round of the Asia-Pacific inter-university international humanitarian law moot court competition. It emerged victorious over Padjadjaran University of Bandung in the final.
Eighteen universities from all over Indonesia participated in the competition, which took place in Jakarta on 10 and 11 December under the auspices of the Indonesian Society of International Law and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The judges awarded Farah Nabila from Universitas Indonesia the title of best individual mooter, while the prize for best memorial went to Pelita Harapan University of Jakarta.
"I am amazed by the commitment and the enthusiasm of the participants," said Vincent Nicod, the head of the ICRC regional delegation in Jakarta "I hope that when it is their turn to be policy makers, they will always be guided by humanitarian values and by the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law."
As the new national champion, the Universitas Indonesia team will now represent Indonesia at the ICRC-supported regional competition, which will take place in Hong Kong in March 2012. There they will have the opportunity to further test their knowledge and to compete against the best teams from 18 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including India, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
In accordance with the mandate conferred on it by the international community, the ICRC strives to raise awareness of and promote compliance with international humanitarian law. Moot court competitions, which familiarize law students with this body of law, are among the many initiatives undertaken with this aim.
