Pakistan/India – ICRC launches website to restore family links following earthquake

10-10-2005 News Release No. 05/55

Geneva (ICRC) – Saturday’s earthquake in South Asia has left tens of thousands dead or missing.

With families around the world worried about the fate of their relatives in the region, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today launched a South Asia Earthquake website to help people exchange information about family members in the disaster zone.

Those in the affected countries can register on the site to inform their families that they are safe and well (either directly or with the help of Red Cross/Red Crescent staff). People seeking news of relatives can consult the list of those who have registered and search for names.

The site is in English and includes full details of how to register oneself as “safe and well” or search for a person in the database.

Information from the website will also be made available locally on lists posted in public places or broadcast by radio for people with no access to the internet.

The humanitarian service provided by the site is open to everyone. However, neither the ICRC nor the Red Cross or Red Crescent Societies can verify the accuracy of the information on it, nor can they be held responsible for the way third parties make use of this information. The ICRC therefore urges everyone to use the service responsibly, in good faith and strictly in accordance with its humanitarian objective.

For more information on how to use the site, members of the public should contact their nearest Red Cross or Red Crescent office.

The ICRC launched similar websites earlier this year for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Asia and hurricane Katarina in the USA.
