Assistance to victims of bomb attacks in Kirkuk

15-06-2006 News Release

On Tuesday, a series of bomb attacks in various parts of the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk killed and injured dozens of people.

The ICRC immediately contacted the main hospital in the city, which requested assistance. Yesterday, a kit with surgical supplies to cover the needs of 100 wounded people was delivered to Al-Joumhouri (Republican) Hospital, which treated some 40 casualties.

Kirkuk, an ethnically sensitive city, has witnessed mounting tensions in the past few weeks. According to various sources in the city, the situation remains extremely volatile. The ICRC will maintain close contact with the health authorities in order to respond to any emergency.

It is worth mentioning that the ICRC has delivered, last week, a similar kit to the Provincial Health Directorate in Basrah, following the explosion of a car bomb in the main market place of this southern city.

The ICRC once again reminds all those involved in the armed conflict of their obligation to respect the rules of international humanitarian law and spare civilians and civilian property.
