ICRC president visits Israel

Geneva (ICRC) – The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, arrived in Israel today by road from Tyre in southern Lebanon after spending two days in that country. He will meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defence Minister Amir Peretz.

Discussions will focus on the humanitarian situation in northern Israel and in Lebanon, access to those in need and the fate of captured soldiers and other people detained in connection with the conflict. Mr Kellenberger will also share the ICRC's concerns regarding the humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.

During his stay, Mr Kellenberger will meet with the chairman of the Magen David Adom, Noam Yifrach, in northern Israel to get a first-hand impression of the situation on the ground.

After his visit to Israel, he will also meet with the president of the Palestine Red Crescent, Younis Al-Khatib, in Ramallah.
