Lebanon/Israel – ICRC Bulletin 10/2006
07-08-2006 Operational Update
Latest report on ICRC activities in the field
Fighting has prevented the ICRC from conducting most of its field operations outside the main cities in the last few days, depriving civilians trapped in villages in southern Lebanon of urgently needed assistance.
Relief operations hampered by fighting
A convoy carrying 950 family parcels, 2,250 mattresses, 360 tarpaulins, 375 blankets and a generator managed to reach Marjayoun from Beirut today. The generator is needed to run the town's water pumps, which came to a standstill after a power cut a few days ago. This was the only convoy that was able to reach cities south of Sidon. Two trips planned jointly with Lebanese Red Cross ambulances to villages near the border south of Marjayoun, where the war wounded urgently await evacuation and bodies need to be collected, had to be cancelled owing to the fighting. The delivery to villages near Tyre of two consignments of food assistance, fuel for medical facilities and water pumps also had to be cancelled.
Lebanese Red Cross helps deliver liquid oxygen to hospitals in Sidon
The Lebanese Red Cross Society marked a private truck carrying liquid oxygen with the red cross emblem so that it could travel from Beirut to Sidon, where it delivered its consignment to the city's hospitals. The ICRC worked with the Society to obtain the green light for the operation. Between 12 July and 7 August, Lebanese Red Cross personnel working round the clock have evacuated 717 wounded, transported 5,438 medical cases and collected 240 bodies.
Ship rerouted to Sidon
A ship carrying 21,400 ready-to-eat meals, 1.5 tonnes of water and sanitation equipment, and three tonnes of kitchen sets and bedding was expected to reach the port of Tyre from Larnaca, Cyprus, yesterday. As the ICRC did not receive the green light for this operation, the ship had to be rerouted to Sidon today.
Magen David Adom action in northern Israel
Since 12 July, the Magen David Adom (MDA) has been providing medical services for civilians affected by the hostilities in northern Israel. MDA personnel have treated and evacuated hundreds of persons, including 105 severely and moderately injured individuals, and collected the bodies of 82 persons, half of whom were soldiers. The MDA has also been providing treatment for some 6,000 persons relocated from northern Israel to a tent camp near the city of Ashkelon, south of Tel Aviv.
Convoys reach Beirut from Syria
The ICRC delegation in Damascus continues to support the humanitarian operation in Lebanon by facilitating the passage of ICRC and other Red Cross/Red Crescent convoys through Syria and into Lebanon. In the last three days, 13 Turkish Red Crescent trucks and one ICRC convoy (the sixth so far), together with a Qatari Red Crescent Land Cruiser carrying aid personnel, reac hed Lebanon via the border city of Dabbusiyah, in northern Syria. Owing to road damage, the journey was long and arduous but all the convoys eventually reached Beirut.
