Philippines: New publication on international humanitarian law
27-09-2006 News Release 06/56
The University of the Philippines Law Center has published the inaugural edition of the Asia-Pacific Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law, which aims to become the primary source of up-to-date information on international humanitarian law as experienced, taught and developed in the Asia-Pacific region.
Compliance with international humanitarian law is crucial to reducing as much as possible the tragic consequences of conflict. It is also consistent with the aims of the ASEAN Security Community, according to Umesh Kadam, the ICRC’s regional delegate to academic circles, who has provided technical support for the Yearbook project since its inception. “ASEAN’s 2004 Vientiane Action Programme refers to the shaping and sharing of norms, conflict prevention, conflict resolution and post-conflict peace-building. International humanitarian law directly contributes to achieving these aims.”
The Yearbook will be formally unveiled at the University of the Philippines on 27 September.
