Facts and Figures

Since hostilities intensified in early April 2012 in the areas on the border shared by Sudan and South-Sudan, the ICRC has stepped-up its activities in the region.

  • The ICRC facilitated on 25 and 26 April 2012 the repatriation of 13 Sudanese prisoners of war from South-Sudan to Sudan. The ICRC donated clothing, mosquito nets, soap, sleeping mats and shoes to the Sudanese prisoners of war before their repatriation while they were in detention. The prisoners were also offered the opportunity to send messages to their loved ones through the ICRC.
  • The ICRC has visited conflict-related detainees.
  • On two occasions since the conflict intensified, the ICRC has donated surgical consumables, including wound-dressing materials, set splints and IV fluids, as well as drugs and other essential items to Bentiu Civil Hospital. In early April, the organization deployed an emergency surgical team to the hospital to perform essential surgery on nine wounded combatants.
  • In early April 2012, the ICRC completed a distribution of seed and agricultural tools around Agok, a town in the southern part of the disputed Abyei area, to approximately 15,000 people who were displaced by fighting in May 2011 and to the host communities. The assistance should ensure adequate harvests in August 2012.
