The ICRC in Colombia

Colombia is the largest ICRC operation in the Americas. The ICRC's work in Colombia involves protecting civilians, helping displaced persons and conflict-affected communities, visiting detainees, promoting international humanitarian law, helping people affected by weapons contamination and cooperating with the Colombian Red Cross and other Movement components active in Colombia.  Read full overview.

Facts and Figures

Between January and August 2011, the ICRC:

• provided food assistance and distributed essential items to over 28,000 displaced persons;

• facilitated health-care access in four conflict zones that are home to more than 15,000 people;

• carried out farming projects and equipped schools, benefiting some 12,000 people living in conflict-stricken areas;

• made 71 visits to 45 places of detention and carried out individual monitoring of the situation of 4,000 detainees;

• documented 440 cases of alleged violations of international humanitarian law and other legal provisions, and took initiatives to remind armed groups of their duty to comply with these provisions;

• provided financial support for 330 people threatened with death, enabling them to move to a safer location;

• facilitated the release of six people held by the FARC-EP.
