Lebanon: 30,000 people to benefit from ICRC water project in Kfar Melki
Beirut (ICRC) – A major water project completed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is due to be formally inaugurated on Saturday 21 June in the Hussayniyah of Kfar Melki, in the southern part of Lebanon.

The event will be attended by Lebanon’s minister of electricity and water resources, Mr Mohammad Fneich.

The project involved equipping a well, laying a 2.7-kilometre pipeline and building a pumping station, at a cost of 247,000 US dollars. The work, carried out by the ICRC in close cooperation with the local water board, will benefit around 30,000 inhabitants of several villages in the area. It was completed in February after a year of construction. The well now contributes an additional 2,700 cubic metres daily to the main supply.

"Kfar Melki and the surrounding villages have had a long history of water shortages. We had only one borehole, and it was not really functional," said Adel Hammoud, head of the Kfar Melki municipality. "Thanks to the ICRC's repair work, Kfar Melki and the surrounding villages now have access to clean water."

Since the 2006 war the ICRC has spent nearly US$ 5,000,000 on 100 water projects which benefit over one million people all over Lebanon.

The inauguration ceremony is open to the media:
